the story of the harp, or, let's hear it for research!

In a moment of insanity...

It wasn't my fault. Really. I was just an innocent bystander.

Then I got the idea for the third book, Bard's Oath, and that was that. As you might guess, a harp will play a major role in the story. And what better way to learn a bit about the building of a harp than to make one?

Now, I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid. There's no way I have the woodworking skills, tools, time, or know-how to build a harp from scratch. That's for experts. Or people who are even more masochistic than I am--and I do silversmithing, so that's saying something.

Instead, I decided to go the kit route. I felt that would give me some idea of what goes into the building of a harp, and, since the components were made by an expert, if I don't screw up, I'll have a pretty nice little instrument in the end.

So after much angst (and driving Sam crazy listening to me dither back and forth), I settled on a kit from Steve Green of
Steen Harps in West Virginia. I picked the 31-string Celtic model.
